Presentation


GRUPO BRASIL, a network of organizations that provide services to deafblind people in Brasil and ADEFAV, a resource center (on multiple impairment and deafblindness), are pleased to announce they are hosting the 15th Deafblind International World Conference on Deafblindness in São Paulo Brazil, September 27 through October 01, in 2011.

Inclusion for a lifetime of opportunities has been selected as the theme for this conference. This theme carries forward the theme of the last World Conference in Perth Australia (2007) which was titled 'World Wide Connections - breaking the isolation'.

The theme 'Inclusion for a lifetime of opportunities' will explore options for people who are deafblind to develop relationships with their family members, their friends, their schools or colleges and those professionals working closely with them.

The conference will review and analyse situations that not only connect deafblind people with one another but enable the development of their best potential together with achieving their independence.

This is seen as a great opportunity for Latin America to share its own experiences with the rest of the world and to highlight the special needs and issues of the Brazilian context. In a sense, this will be seen as a DbI Conference with the face of Latin America.

History

Founded over 30 years ago, Deafblind International (DbI) is the world association promoting services for deafblind people through international collaboration.
DbI brings together professionals, researchers, families, deafblind people and administrators to raise awareness of deafblindness. Central to our work is to support the development of services to enable a good quality of life for deafblind children and adults.

Its objects purposes) are:

    • to promote and improve the recognition and awareness of deafblindness as a unique congenital or acquired disability that affects children, adults and elderly people
    • to support the civil rights of deafblind people and the equalisation of opportunities in all aspects of life
    • to encourage the development of networks and opportunities for association and learning for professionals and to the benefit of deafblind people and their families
    • to enable interaction between deafblind people, families, professionals, organisations in the field and the wider community
    • to promote and improve education and opportunities for development for deafblind people
    • to encourage support and services for deafblind people that lead to self-determination and quality of life, and
    • to promote and improve quality in services for deafblind people by encouraging research, staff development and training, policies that lead to good practice and the dissemination of information.

Membership of DbI is open to organisations, institutions, networks and individuals.

Call for Papers

The coordinating committee is inviting the submission of abstracts for workshops and poster sessions for the XV World Deafblind International Conference. Submissions should relate to the theme of the conference “Inclusion for a Lifetime of Opportunities” and focus on one of the sub-themes identified by the Scientific Committee relating to lifelong services for individuals who are deafblind:

Abstracts should be further categorized by selecting one of the following:

  1. Research Scientific and Evidence-Based
  2. Education/Rehabilitation Innovative Approaches for Children and Adults
  3. Program Models Suggestions for Improvement of Service Delivery
  4. Staff Development Effective Models and Creative Approaches
  5. Families Supports and Partnerships

Selection: All abstracts will be peer-reviewed according to the following criteria:

  1. Innovation.
  2. Relevance to theme and sub-themes of conference.
  3. Clarity and proof of outcomes.
  4. Diversity in application to worldwide environments.
  5. Relation to the number of papers accepted in a particular sub-theme.
  6. Space permitting.

Useful Information

The City of São Paulo

São Paulo is one of the largest cities in the world, with over 18 million people in its metropolitan area. It hosts around 15% of Brazilian GDP and is the heart of the Brazilian economy.
It is metropolitan in nature, with a diversified population, composed of Italians, Germans, Japanese (the largest community outside Japan), Lebanese, Chinese, Koreans, Spaniards and, of course, Portuguese.
The São Paulo state road system, composed of modern highways, converges to São Paulo city. Good coaches are available every 30 minutes to Rio de Janeiro (5-hour ride), Belo Horizonte (6-hours), Curitiba (5 hours), and Campinas (1 hour).
The nearby beautiful beaches at Santos and Guarujá cities are accessed by a state-of-the-art highway, with buses every 15 minutes. It features two of the busiest airports in Brazil: International Airport of Sao Paulo / Guarulhos - Governador André Franco Montoro - or Cumbica Airport – GRU and Congonhas Airport / São Paulo - CGH - with many options for flights abroad and for all major cities in Brazil. Trains are not used for passenger transport only domestic consumer goods.


Weather

The climate is tropical of altitude, characterized by summer rainfall and average annual temperature between 19°C and 27°C. But all seasons can be seen in a single day in Sao Paulo. The city may dawn sunny and cloudless and finish the day with a thunderstorm. So it is common to see “Paulistanos” with coats and umbrellas on hot days.
Those days are most common during the summer, when rain usually falls in late afternoon, relieving the heat. In autumn, the temperature is mild, averaging around 23°C. Winter usually has dry and sunny, with temperatures rarely drop below 15 ºC. In spring, the days are very hot and dry.


Transportation

In Sao Paulo, the best way to get to a hotel or to the city center is by taxi. When travelers choose the taxis, they should try to use the airport taxi companies. These taxis offer a fixed rate from the airport (R$ 70 to R$ 160). They are reliable and safe, unlike some other line of taxis. Taxis in the city are white (no stripes). The trip from the airport Guarulhos International - GRU – and the city center takes about 40 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. Avoid the flight schedules from 08h - 10h and 17h - 20h, because this is what the “Paulistanos” call "rush hour" - traffic is intensified at these times.
Another option to reach the city's international airport is by regular bus. A special bus service (www.airportbusservice.com.br) offers numerous routes around the city. These buses run 24 hours, and traveling to the airport should take about 40-50 minutes.
Majority of the population does not speak English or another foreign language, only the country's official language, Portuguese.

At the airport

Pay close attention during check-in and when claiming baggage as these are the most critical times for travelers, who are often tired. Airport crowds can also be distracting, making travelers more vulnerable to theft. Always remain alert at airport terminals and remember the following:

  • Upon claiming your baggage, make sure it is closed in the exact same manner as when you checked it.
  • To ask for information or assistance always look for an identified police officer or an employee of the airline you are using. Never talk to strangers. There is a DEATUR police station at all São Paulo airports, staffed by specially trained professionals to provide assistance to travelers.
  • Always keep a close eye on your belongings. Be careful with men or women who approach you to ask questions. Their objective could be simply to distract you. Respond normally while not letting your baggage out of your sight.
  • Do not open suitcases or other bags in public, especially if they contain electronic equipment or money.
  • Never handle large quantities of cash in public.
  • If you must use an ATM, make sure no one is watching when you enter your security code. If the machine malfunctions, only request assistance from identified employees.
  • Never agree to carry packages for people you don’t know.
  • If another person is not feeling well and asks you to go get help, do so but do not leave your belongings with this person, even if he or she insists that you can move more quickly without your belongings.
  • When using taxis or renting cars, choose only registered professionals and companies. When entering the vehicle, ask that all your belongings be placed in the trunk. If the driver refuses, look for another taxi.
  • It is important to keep your luggage in the trunk, especially if you are carrying a laptop computer.
  • When using your mobile phone inside the taxi, keep the device away from the window.
  • In slow moving traffic, do not handle large quantities of cash inside the vehicle.


  • At hotels

    It is important to pay special attention at hotels, as visitors spend the majority of their time there. Despite having security guards and a close relationship with the police, hotels are not immune to crime. Follow these suggestions to have a more pleasant stay:

  • While checking in or out, leave your bags with a hotel employee or keep them in front of you, preferably between your body and the reception counter.
  • During meals, leave your belongings inside the room, or ask an employee to keep them for you while you dine.
  • Never leave your wallet, purse, cell phone or handheld computer on the table if you need to get up momentarily.
  • Always keep your belongings in sight while in hotel common areas. Never put them next to you or behind your seat and always keep them close by.
  • Don’t bring people you don’t know to the hotel.
  • If you do receive visitors in the room where you are staying, it is mandatory that they fill out the visitor registration form.
  • When you want to go out, ask the hotel employees for information. They can help you with good suggestions for activities and restaurants that are safe and conveniently located.
  • If you are organizing an event at the hotel, all participants should be properly identified with badges. When leaving meeting rooms, make sure the doors are closed. Keep hotel security well informed before and during the event.
  • Use the safe in your hotel room.
  • Try not to discuss important matters, especially those involving money, near people you don’t know.
  • Never accept help from strangers. All hotel employees in the city wear uniforms with proper identification during work hours, and are trained to help visitors.


  • At restaurants

    During meals your attention is focused on the table, which could compromise your safety. Follow this advice to avoid problems:

  • Choose places recommended by friends or the staff at your hotel. Find out the best way to get there, the best time to go and what type of service the restaurant offers, etc
  • When you get to the restaurant, ask that your bag or baggage be checked. Use baggage locks if you are carrying valuable objects or money. When your objects are returned to you, make sure everything is in order.
  • If the restaurant does not have suitable place to safeguard your belongings, keep a close eye on them.
  • Never leave valuable objects on the table such as wallets or mobile phones, especially if you have to get up from the table, even momentarily.
